Rabbi Saul Rubin

Rabbi Saul J. Rubin has served Temple Beth Tefilloh since August of 1986. Born in Newark N.J., he relocated with his family to Augusta Geogia in 1950. He is a graduate of Drew University ( Magna Cum Laude), did graduate work at Columbia University, and received ordination (semicha) at the Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati, Ohio in 1958. In 1969 he was awarded his Master of Arts in Hebrew Letters and his Doctor of Divinity in 1983. He served Congregation Beth Ahabah in Richmond, VA from 1960 until he was invited to accept the pulpit in Savannah, GA, Temple Mickve Israel. He was elected Rabbi Emeritus in 1986. Rabbi Rubin's publications include THIRD TO NONE: THE SAGA OF SAVANNAH JEWS 1733-1983; A BRIEF HISTORY OF SAVANNAH'S HISTORIC CONGREGATION with Dr. Thomas Austin ( published by Georgia's 250th Annniversary Committee); and articles for Moment Magazine, The CCAR Journal, The Reconstructionist and Communique. In 1992, he received the Community Service Award from the United Way. He also received the Rev. Martin Gilbert Award from the Economic Opportunity Authority for building bridges in the community between diverse persons.

His civic involvement has been extensive, including service to the United Way, chair of the Homeless Coalition and Homeless Authority, chair of the Minute Man committee of Rotary, and a trustee of the Georgia Historical Society among others. His service to Jewish organizations include : President and Chair of the Board of the Southern Jewish Historical Society; Chair of the Havurah Committee of the Central Conference of American Rabbis; Board Member of the Havurah Committee; director of Avodah, a creative liturgy group; and associate editor of the Havurah Journal. Since 1988, the rabbi has facilitated community building workshops in the area as well as in Tucson, AZ. Woodland Hills, CA and Atlanta, GA. He has worked with Lily and Dr Scott Peck as part of the Alpha Group of the Foundation for Community Encouragement, regionalizing the community building movement for the Foundation for Community Encouragement. In recent years he has served as a rabbi for the Princess and Cunard lines. During the 1996 Olympics, he was credentialed as one of three clergymen , functioning in the Village for the yachting athletes.
